Ubuntu for Phones: A Continuum Competitor | Pocketnow

It’s been three years since we last used Ubuntu on smartphones. In that time, the platform has gained compatibility with a wider range of hardware, picked up a few interface improvements, and spawned some slick new features. From the Ubuntu booth at MWC join Michael Fisher for a quick hands-on with Ubuntu on the Meizu Pro 5!

  • But if the apps are available I think apple is out of business because this won't need 8gb ram and those expensive phone will be out of business

  • Michael, make a video of this on Mr Mobile channel!!
    2017 re-review

  • Now arch linux for phones 😀 with KDE Plasma Mobile :DDDD or some kind of GNOME Touchscreen version

  • Excuse me Mr. Presenter, but when you say Mobil instead of Mobile is it because you're referring to the Oil company Mobil? There is an 'e' at the end of that word you know, like 'Like' and not 'Lik'. Oh, thats right, you're a yank.

  • Wouldn't be surprised if Google's rumored Andromeda OS is similar to this. They are already combining Android and ChromeOS with android app support on Chromebooks. It's just the next step in ChromeOS or Android's evolution

  • For the computer to phone concept to work well, you either need a solid windowed version of the OS For display, or x86 on phones. Microsoft should just make everything run on x86, or have two builds of Windows, one for ARM processors and one for x86.

  • aaaaaaand it's dead, the whole thing. Unity 7 & 8, Ubuntu phone, Ubuntu tablet, convergence. All of it.

  • There aren't any thing exciting on smartphones anymore!! how true!!

  • The hummingbird
    is not just another bird.
Its heart rate's 1,200 beats per minute.
Its wings beat 80 times a second.
If you was to stop their wings
from beating, it would be dead
    in less than 10 seconds.
    This is no ordinary bird.
    This is a frickin' miracle.
    They slowed down their wings
    with moving pictures,
and you know what they saw?
    Their wingtips are doing that.
You know what the figure eight
    is the mathematical symbol for?
    Infinity. Infinity

  • Since Android is running on Linux, can Ubuntu run Android apps?

  • The UI is too much like Android. I like the computer extension option so I can see me going for this over a Android phone, but I was hoping for something really different…like Windows Phone different, but different from even Windows Phone. Yawning…

  • Man I am so sick of google shoving their cock down my throat I'm tempted to get one just to tell the "Do Be Evil" company to go fuck themselves with a sandpaper horsedick.

  • I really want a Ubuntu phone. Too bad they are all sold out.

  • how to apps are built? C++/qt and javascript? I'm tired of android VM (ART) lag and its bad memory management.

  • I wonder how this would compare to android and apple side by side if this went mainstream.

  • I'd also love to see Ubuntu phones flourish because android is basically a way for google to get ALL of your data. The google ecosystem works, but it sucks, especially when it comes to backups. Apple's ecosystem is amazing, it works, but it's just so expensive to keep up with. If Ubuntu could get more apps – scrap this "scopes" thing, because it looks crap, then I think we've got a competitor on our hands. An open-source mobile phone with LTS updates would be incredible…

  • Can this phone import google play contacts?
