Ubuntu running on the M1! Can it be so? The first 1,000 people to use this link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: https://skl.sh/techhut09211

“UTM employs Apple’s Hypervisor virtualization framework to run ARM64 operating systems on Apple Silicon at near native speeds. On Intel Macs, x86/x64 operating system can be virtualized. In addition, lower performance emulation is available to run x86/x64 on Apple Silicon as well as ARM64 on Intel. For developers and enthusiasts, there are dozens of other emulated processors as well including: ARM32, MIPS, PPC, and RISC-V. Your Mac can now truly run anything.”

  • how do I make the ubuntu server public can you talk about networking? thanks

  • @TechHut glad i found this video, you have just earned a new sub. I was having lots of errors trying to use docker on M1, so decided to go the VM route. and UTM is just smooth on M1.

    Thank you 😀

  • Hello, the UTM on my laptop looks different, and it requires me to choose between "Virtualize" and "Emulate" whenever I create a new virtual machine. Which one should I choose?

  • Either Firefox works or the system apps. If we use XORG, system apps like terminal, files, and settings don't work; if wayland is used, firefox does not. Wasted three hours figuring this out the hard way. Tried both direct installation and the server installation method. This is for M1 Pro Macbook on Venture 13.1.

Let me know if you could run it on this system configuration. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this video. I bought a new Mac recently and i was not finding ways to run VM. Virtual Box doesn't work.

  • Hello copper head can you tell us the detail which variant of M1 Air was used 16 GB or 8gb model without telling it it's not clear what you are up to?

  • When I run the command sudo apt install tasksel, the message is "tasksel is alreadyt the newest version (3.68unbuntu2). Then if I run sudo tasksel install ubuntu-desktop the screen just blinks and an empty command prompt comes up. So it looks like the computer cannot find the file.

  • I just installed it on m2 macbook and UTM has vastly improved and almost all tweaks are already pre made. if you think this video is complicated don't worry it is much easier now.

  • Oh!Many thanks for desktop trick!!!!! Ubuntu 22 has a lot of issues.

  • QEMU exited from an error: qemu-aarch64-softmmu: device requires 67108864 bytes, block backend provides 540672 bytes

  • I'd like to see a benchmark compairaison between a x86 emultated os (like ubuntu amd64) versus a vm (ubuntu arm).

  • I donno why but i'm stuck on login (after installing when i try to write the ubuntu's password i just can't)

  • So these are arm Linux os's? So how's steam and proton work? Or does it at all?

  • Hello, if I get this "QEMU exited from an error: qemu-aarch64-softmmu: device requires 67108864 bytes, block backend provides 540672 bytes" error message when installing ubuntu server, what input should i go change?
my knowledge to VM is extremely limited and the interface for the latest UTM is fairly different to what shown here, im trying as much as i could to follow but i guess i missed some parts. appreciate anyone's help. Thanks!

  • For the folks who ran into the following error.

debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog

Doing the command below should do the trick.

    $ apt-get install dialog apt-utils -y

  • Why did you say they are less powerful? It has been proven time and again that they are more powerful
It was just the thinking previously that arm was slow, because the processors were made to be scaled down and more efficient (not that they have been slow in phones for years)

  • woohoo! Finally, I got VM on my M1 Mac Pro. At first, I was struggle with using Virtual Box to run Ubuntu, however, your video helped me out. Thanks for your videos <3

  • great!!!! i was struggle swtiching between my intel and m1. thanks!!!!

  • Hey I get to the login page but my page is all black? And when i try to log into Ubuntu it just spins for a bit and puts me back to the login page? Is there a fix? I've tried reinstalling multiple times already

  • Parallels supports Linux for Mac? I looked on their website and I didn’t see it.

  • The free version doesn't work for linux. Why would I even try the one on the Apple Store if the free one sucks?

  • thanks needs update on ubuntu version but all commands worked perfectly, easy to follow and still relevant, thanks again fun to do

  • Anyone know if there are a step by step guides for installing ubuntu on M1? I have no idea how to install it.

  • Many thanks that you recorded this video on this particular topic, as I ended up purchasing a standalone copy of Parallels earlier today as it was on sale and was surprised (although I probably should have known better) that on an Apple Silicon Mac that it only supports ARM-based VMs.

This video has been very educational with regards to what I need to do to get Ubuntu running as a VM in Parallels, I'm looking forward to giving it a try later tonight. Thank you!

  • I am stuck at sudo tasksel ubuntu-desktop, after typing the command nothing happens it just takes me to the next line.

    Please help

  • sudo tasksel install ubuntu-desktop nothing happens!!!!!
What should i do for that?

  • 8:06, sudo tasksel install ubuntu-desktop is not working for me, nothing happened :/

  • I follow all the steps but I keep getting the Debian distro at the end, not Ubuntu. Is anyone else experiencing this?
