Feel free to Flattr this 🙂

Ubuntu 10.04 used via the Easystroke application.

Here’s the settings I use, but I encourage you to experiment to find what suits you best:

I forgot to mention in the credits that the screen capture video in ogv format was first converted into .avi with mencoder to before getting it work in Blender.

  • In the old days Gnome-Do (and now Synapse) were my top apps, but I must say that the perfection of using keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures (often it's important to design a keyboard shortcut to map on to gestures…) has completely dominated my experience.

When I sit at an unfamiliar Windows computer now, the effort required to do anything at all just seems incredible (though the Start menu does work nicely… it's just not the same thing). To need to separate mouse/keyboard functions, actually need to click on buttons and stuff like that – it's just crazy.

My current mouse has two extra buttons (thumb) which I mapped 'Stroke 9-9' is 'ctrl' and '8-8' is 'Alt' so that I don't need to hit the alt or ctrl keyboard buttons as extra modifiers… for easy zooming etc.

Xkill's a nice one, draw an x and get a skull and crossbones to kill anything onscreen… Vmax and Hmax (horizontal and Vertical maximisation toggles) as well as the originals (from the very early days of Opera browser, the first one to have tabs controled by mouse).

What we'll be needing next will be to keep up with audio – voice recognition (think about Siri/Google on phones). Now if we can get this hooked up we'll be cooking!

  • I control my spotify-app with easystrocke, just stop and play without opening spotifiy, great! Should be standard in every os…

  • I have Ubuntu 14.04 and I have setup Easystroke to start Firefox with a simple mouse gesture, the only issue is the gesture will only work when I have Easystroke open and I do the gesture INSIDE the window. If i click hide or minimize or close Easystroke program, the gesture no longer works. I can see the red line when I try to make the gesture but it doesn’t open Firefox. Any ideas OP?

  • You got a pretty great desktop configuration, I can imagine it took you some time to achieve it! I really hope your current system is as awesome as this was in 2010 😀

  • This is a very cool app! Can't wait for those ubuntu tablets.

  • Hey man great vid!

I have a question dough, how do you get your "application bar" to look like the one in mac?
I really love the way ubuntu looks with you so could you give a tutorial on that pls ?

  • This is seriously making me consider Getting ubuntu as a main OS. Only issue i've got with that is that linux has NOGAEMS.

  • @coldReactive It says so in the description. I posted my settings as well.

  • anyone please tell me where to get this wallpaper?

  • Awesome, I never know this feature before!

  • Many thanks for the screenshot of your setup! Think I'll be copying atleast half of those, they're very intuitive! -Folo (Johan).

  • Why the hell didn't I know this existed? Just installed and configured Easystroke and it is simply amazing. I could only imagine it mixed with a touchscreen. Some gestures I did see you using that I am using is a triangle for play/pause. Really it ends up being more of a D but it works.

  • Now THIS combined with touch actually could make a full blown OS on an a slate device usable. Canonical should push to get devices out there for those that want more power and control than whats offered on the mobile based tablets.

  • @Tobelli
I understand, it is done with a little workaround.
First, I have set some keyboard shortcuts in Compiz Grid.
    For example:
    'Put Left' = CTRL+SUPER+A and
    'Put Bottom' = CTRL+SUPER+X
Then, in EasyStroke settings I made the gesture for Compiz Grid Left, Type=Key, and then there is the keyboard shortcut, which is CTRL+SUPER+A.
    Pretty simple
I hope you can get it to work 🙂
    Cheers.

  • Swanky. Very stylish. I'd love to use EasyStroke on a touch-screen.
