Unix Roots: macOS vs FreeBSD – Same Foundation But Different Audience?
FreeBSD is a free and open-source operating system that was designed based on the two Unix-like operating systems, Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) and Research Unix 1. On the other hand, macOS is a UNIX certified system that is based on BSD and Darwin 2. Both operating systems share a common ancestor and significant userland code 3.
While both macOS and FreeBSD have common roots, they have some key differences. For instance, macOS has a polished UI that is rather unrivaled, while FreeBSD is designed for performance and stability. Additionally, macOS has more commercial software and gaming support compared to other Unix systems, while FreeBSD won’t change everything from a version to another, tries to keep and maintain old tools as long as possible, and won’t replace half the system every two versions like GNU/Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, Arch or Fedora does.
