UNRAID License and Pricing Model Changes – How the New Subscription Model Will Impact You
Unraid users uncovered code about the shift from a one-time purchase to a subscription-based model recently. With my own history of utilizing Unraid since 2016, I offer a unique perspective on the community’s response, particularly the initial uproar on Reddit, as we explore the company’s reasons behind this new pricing structure. Is unraid subscription model going to be right for you? We examine some possible numbers! Existing users are grandfathered in, so you can rest easy on if you have existing licenses for now.
Whether you’re a long-time supporter or on the cusp of joining the community, this is a major change. I talk about the new Starter and Unraid Unleashed licenses as well as why you might want to secure a basic license now. Be sure to check out the Space Invader One Uncast interview here as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PihqSOF8wnA&t and the blog post (link in the footer to discussion in forums) https://unraid.net/blog/pricing-change
Security updates on Unraid being one of the major points, we spend a decent amount of time talking about upgrades if you have internet connected systems. The good news is that so many very badly needed changes could be funded by this, if it is a success. Everything from a new Unraid API to encourage community developers and modernizing the interface.

I would pay $200 for unraid lifetime in a heartbeat for a primary or secondary server. I'd probably pay $300 but I'd need to budget it. If I'm spinning up a more focused use case, that would hurt, where the $129 I could eat without too much complaining. They need a recurring revenue stream but not a subscription model. I think this strikes a nice compromise as long as lifetime doesn't triple or more in price.
Checking in for some DS + Unraid love
I'm still not sure why someone would intentionally buy unraid when truenas scale exists.
Nice video Thanks for sharing it with us!💖👍😎JP
Why use unraid instead of truenas? Also, subscription model doesn't work. Why follow ms and ibm into the void?
HAHA, yeah D&D really dropped the ball on season 8 of "centOS". If we are talking about more expert features, I think seeing things like clustering, fiberchannel support, better support for faster network compatibility(RDMA, etc), and VM migration would be worth the cost.
