Unveiling Ubuntu 24.04 LTS – The Noble Numbat
Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, announced that the upcoming long-term support release, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, will receive an extended 12 years of updates. Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical’s CEO, revealed this commitment during an interview at the Ubuntu Summit, describing it as a “platinum grade enterprise commitment” similar to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The extended support covers the entire distribution and approximately 30,000 source packages. Ubuntu Pro users can expect security and maintenance through regular updates for the next 12 years. This announcement alters the previous expectation of up to 10 years of support until April 2034. Without Ubuntu Pro, standard LTS support of five years until 2029 is provided. The move signifies a significant extension in the support period, potentially lasting until at least April 2036. Users interested in extended support can consider Ubuntu Pro, currently free for personal use on up to five machines, while enterprises can contact Canonical for pricing details.
