Varia – A New Linux Download Manager

Today we look at a new Flatpak Linux download manager based on GTK4. It is brand new, but seems to work pretty well, with a few little bumps in the road.

  • This is probably an ignorant question, but what's the purpose of stand-alone download managers? In those very rare cases your browsers built-in download manager can't handle something, there are curl, wget, rsync, scp, tnftp and others.
I'm all for giving users GUI front-ends and alternatives to CLI tools, but downloads that can't be managed with a browser are so few and far between, I'm a bit surprised to learn that there exist multiple GUI download managers.

  • Maybe I am not understanding what exactly this does differently than Firefox. It downloads something. Okay.

  • omg it is like you have never used the internet before

  • I recommend free download manager , it has a firefox and a chromium extension and works perfectly with a lot of options.

  • Switching to Linux implies there was something to switch from. And, switching from MS DOS or CP/M to Linux is the best move.

  • Yes this actually seems really useful for downloading large files

  • The cluttered mess in the directory is irritating. Would be nice to use hidden filenames or have a json temp directory in the program directory where those temporary files could be stored while a download is in progress. Or have the downloads taking place in a temp directory and completed files can be moved to downloads or a completed directory when finished. There's no reason to expose all the clutter in user space.

  • it's called pre-allocation when the disk space gets used up before the download is complete. i don't know the inner workings, but torrent clients specifically have exposed this setting forever. Ii think it's just somethiing avaiilable in libtorrrent. while this iis not a torrent cliient, it's going to use the same magic sauce because wouldn't youu raather the software warn you that disk space is insufficient before you download 80% of it?

  • I don't know why I would want this over what's built into the browser?

  • every since i found aria2c its been godsend to me with my raspberry pi running plex to download media via ssh. If they can integrate this with the browsers that would be useful for everyday desktop usage
