VM Migration on KVM orchestrated by Openstack
VM Live Migration orchestrated by Juniper OpenStack.
Virtual Machine migration is a process to move a virtual machine from one host to another host in a cloud or data centre.
The lab has the base IaaS platform installed prior to the demo – Hypervisor, OpenStack, Switch for interHost (Compute nodes) IP connectivity, SDN software (Contrail), shared storage enabled on Compute node, and VM image using Ubuntu.
The demo video illustrates the ease to move an active VM from one host to another host with very minimal disruption to the active VM. Live migration task is available to OpenStack Admin dashboard.
Video lab environment:
2 Compute nodes, hypervisor installed is KVM, CentOS 6.4.
1 Config/Control node to manage IaaS platform and services.
VM live migration required shared storage. I installed NFS server on Config node.
VM image used is Ubuntu.
CMS (cloud management software) is based on Juniper Openstack. Purchased from Juniper or trial license.
Overlay networking service is handled by Juniper Contrail 1.03 software. Purchased from Juniper or trial license. You could also try on OpenContrail, open source that can be downloaded from www.opencontrail.org.
