“W3C’s Accessible Platform Architectures: The Working Group you haven’t heard of but probably should know more about” offers an overview of what APA does and how it drives innovation for future a11y technologies. You may also learn how you can join the working group.
Specific overview examples include:
* What is W3C horizontal review and how does it support enhancing accessibility?
* Standardization for achieving robust, consistent text-to-speech output across operating environments.
* How we’re leveraging Internet Engineering Task Force’s (IETF) Well-Known-URI Registry.
* How we’re bringing augmentative alternative communication (AAC) support to web content.
* Our emerging Accessibility Maturity Model.
* How our Research Questions Task Force supports our work through the publication of accessibility user requirements aimed at specific types of technology.
Presenter bio
Janina Sajka was recruited into accessibility technology development and advocacy by Ed Roberts and Judy Heumann, leading luminaries of the international independent living movement. Working with the World Institute on Disability (WID), they recognized early that personal computer technology would need to be made accessible and usable by persons with disabilities proactively.
Janina later moved to the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), in New York City, as Director of Information Technology and she later worked as a Washington, DC-based lobbyist for AFB. While at the AFB her work increasingly turned to multiple U.S. and international standards activities. She was named a Linux Foundation Fellow as a consequence of standardization leadership in Linux/Unix accessibility.
She continues to drive standardization in web technologies through the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) where she Co-Chairs the Accessible Platform Architectures (APA) Working Group. The Group is tasked with two pivotal roles within W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative:
* Review of all emerging W3C standards; and
* Development of new technologies where a need is identified.
Recognized as a consensus builder with profound empathy and understanding for the needs of multiple communities, Janina is also widely acknowledged for her ability to provocatively situate technology trends in a broad multi-generational historical context. The fact that some of her projects are controversial only motivates her to work harder to find the inherent value to be grasped and nourished in the accessibility work that captures her passion.
