What caused the CrowdStrike-Microsoft global tech outage?

A global tech outage Friday grounded planes, sent offices offline and disrupted multiple industries. Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike says it identified a critical problem in its software and is working to fix the issue. Justin Cappos, professor and cybersecurity expert at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering, joins CBS News to explain what caused the outage and when things could return to normal.

  • It is not a mistake. Its a coverup of a hack or act of attack. Companies will not tell you all details. Such an issue would get easily identified with a basic test. It might also be a test to show an impact on businesses and people. Its not a mistake. Its intentional. Stop uaing cloud.

  • This is a test for a bigger plan, Im not letring the media cover up fool me.

  • I never knew this would happened I live in Columbus to but I’m actually on vacation why would they do this to columbus

  • Funny how it didn’t affect the communist countries (China & Russia)

  • It was probably just a set up to let as much of our personal information out as possible then blame it on this glitch.

  • a test on people and stopping business. obvious no testing of system. microsoft is long done. hear more completes thru recent years. all hate their new programs. not to mention expensive inconviences they caused and cost the public. funny all cells worked

  • We should go back to mom and pop businesses and paper cash register. Anybody who opposes this should Stand in airport lines for forty eight hours with other people's crying babies

  • Microsoft must fix their Windows Services Control Manager (SCM) code not to load a bad .sys driver at Windows startup/boot time, tomorrow some other bad file from another trusted partner can do the same in Windows at boot time. In this case the C-00000291.sys file from CrowdStrike crashed millions of windows devices and it contained nothing but a bunch of null characters.

  • I hope I get a million dollars when it comes back everyone gets someones bank account with your name 😂

  • Affected nearly every industry across the globe. Let that sink in. Have you tried to access your bank account?

  • Time to switch to Linux remember them they were forced out of the computer OS system OS game way back in day vastly superior to Microsoft begs us to think when you have a monopoly by one provider who’s product is standard on all computers by default like it or not this is what happens gross negligence on the part of both companies time for an anti trust monopoly injunction against Microsoft and to return to a vibrant market with different options for OS systems just my 2 cents here as I work for a global hotel chain that still has no computer functionality and we are doing everything on paper right now 2 days after the “ fix” hope both of these companies are are seriously going to be investigated this cost millions if not billions in lost revenues and I have no confidence in either company as a provider sending out an update before testing and vetting who does that your a security expert company you have one job and “sorry for the inconvenience “ is lame I hope they go out of business because they have failed on a massive scale to do the one task they are expert at

  • Shouldn't a criminal investigation be set up so that we can be sure that it is not a criminal act financially supported by hostile powers?

  • THIS IS ALL BY DESIGN. THIS IS A TEST RUN TO SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING. THE GREAT RESET, AND YOUR MONEY IS GONE. THIS IS A TRAIL RUN. THIS IS BY DESIGN. WAKE THE HELL UP! THIS WAR IS SPIRITUAL, AND NOT NATURAL. NEW GOVERNEMNT INFULSTRUCTURE TO CONTROL YOU. THIS IS ALL BY DESIGN. THIS IS A TEST RUN TO SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING. THE GREAT RESET, AND YOUR MONEY IS GONE. THIS IS A TRAIL RUN. NEW GOVERNEMNT INFULSTRUCTURE TO CONTROL YOU..

  • Exactly why wasn’t there a change control meeting? There should have be a lab for testing.

  • Am I the only one that finds the fact that the update that crashed the world was called "Crowd Strike" ironic?

    No? Nothing?…whew tough world.

  • As an engineer attaching Microsoft's name to this failure is tantamount to yellow press journalism. The so-called engineer who uttered that nonsesense should be sued for libel.

  • Well the only cyber atta k on population is greed really. And sonething f backfired… 😅😅😅

  • saFe & eFfEcTiVE & fULLy tE$TeD is all the rage.
mistakes were made & lessons were learned, we’re very sorry, mea culpa, mea culpa

  • This happens in other authoritarianism countries when their party or group know there gonna lose,
    Especially Election year,
The Democrats know They have nobody as Popular as Trump,
So might as well cut off the power & blame Russia 🇷🇺 Hackers & China 🇨🇳
