What is a Loopback address ?

In IPv4, the loopback address range is reserved in the private address space and is defined by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) as 127.0.0.0 to 127.255.255.255. The most commonly used loopback address within this range is 127.0.0.1. Each of the 127.x.x.x addresses within this range is considered a loopback address, allowing for various loopback addresses to be used for testing purposes.

In IPv6, the loopback address is represented by ::1. Unlike IPv4, IPv6 does not have a specific range of loopback addresses; instead, ::1 is the singular loopback address for IPv6.

In practical terms, the loopback address allows network applications on a device to communicate with each other without the need for an external network connection.
