What we can learn from the African philosophy of Ubuntu – BBC REEL

The African philosophy of Ubuntu has its roots in the Nguni word for being human. The concept emphasises the significance of community and teaches that ‘a person is a person through others’.

Many view the philosophy as a counterweight to a culture of individualism.

  • Let us correct one biggest error in the opening statement.
    1. We are not the Nguni people, we are the Bantu people (westerners changed us to Nguni people and took the word that defines us and made it to define humans now. We now use the word Abantu for humans now.
2.Ubuntu is the way of life for the Bantu people…in the research of Africans we found out that we all live in a same way. The way of Ubuntu

  • Its a word but very seldom seen or experienced. I have been to 43 African countries and found exactly the opposite.

  • It was such a pleasure to listen to you. You explained everything so explicitly and thanks for this kind of content which teaches us about the value of environment and interdependence of each other and we are social beings.

  • Starting to learn about many philosophical schools of Africa and am very inspired and excited. Another thing I see is a lot of duality, much like Taoism, as opposed to the dichotomous notions of Western Phil and religion.

  • What is the name of the speaker? (isn't it weird that his name appears nowhere in or oaround the video?)

  • I am because you're!! Who is this man talking please!!!! He is a sage from his ways of speaking, he sounds witty…. Much love from Cameroon 🙌 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮

  • Why is Africa so easily homogenized? Ubuntu is not African. It is Zulu. Zulu isn’t all
of Africa. You wouldn’t label Hinduism as Asian. Africa is not a country.

  • This video makes the hair on the back of the neck stand up for anyone who had to live under communism. The ideological network of a communitarian society, however, is unfortunately even more perfect than in communism…. A group disintegrates when members of its group are sacrificed for a "common good"….
Individual right means I can only apply the rights I have (!) to someone else. I cannot mandate the state to forcibly enforce the rights I do not have on someone else!
Think! Our society is currently being transformed by the media and schools into a communitarian society…. Remember collectivism in the past! Were those good times?

  • What is the full name of the narrator in this video? Can anyone help. His name isn't present within the credits?

  • This is such a genuine piece ❤

  • The first quote was Paraphrased in Beast Wars Transformers as "the seeds of the future lie buried in the past".

  • Cool clip, however, I still don't get how to run it in virtual box without that annoyance of getting only a quarter of the screen rendered until you logout and login back again.
