Why do we need both IP and MAC address?
On a TCP/IP network, why do we use both IP and MAC address?
In order to answer this question, we need to answer these two questions first. 1) What happens if we just use MAC address alone, and 2) what happens if we just use IP address alone?
MAC address tells us “who” you are which will never change, and the IP address tells us “where” you are, which can change. Both IP and MAC address makes sure the message is delivered to the right device on the right network. They work together perfectly in TCP/IP world.
