  • I have been tinkering with Linux for a couple of years…I have to learn to use the terminal though. I like windows…but really tired of the bs with using windows. I am presently going into my second week using Linux as my daily machine…on a test pc. My Alienware Windows 11 machine hasn't been turned on in a week…just trying to do everything on this test system that I do on the Alienware machine. THAT includes gaming!! I am using a Manjaro/Arch based distro…Big Linux. It's actually working amazing…better than I expected. The games I presently have installed on this test system is Fallout 4, Outerworlds, Shadow of Mordor…and ready to install Red Dead Redemption 2. All the games installed…are working right out of the box really…just had to make a few tweaks in the game settings, and that is it. I have another system for windows 10, which I will have to use for my iphone…for phone backup and music transfer…and that is it. My Alienware systems warranty comes to an end in May of 2024…and most likely if my linux experience continues to go the way it is now…then my Alien machine will be running Linux by June 2024. I don't do anything crazy with my pc's…so it should be a nice transition.

  • I spent zillions on Mac's in the last decade.
And I got screwed so often that I switched to Linux beginning of 2023.
And yes, it got some time to get used to, but 10 months in I can say that it's a choice that I should have made many years earlier!

  • Been using Linux full time for 8 years , no regrets !

  • Just use bottles to run any windows programs

  • I want this wallpaper! Where can I get that?

  • No mention of Wine/Proton at all?

  • I've been a Linux user for years now, and I didn't know that the middle mouse button is used to paste ! lol

  • It might be easy if you only do developing on your PC, but if you want to do other things, like watching video things start to go south. To open the hell gate, use multi monitors with different sizes, and use Wayland! I am using Gnome, Wayland, fractional scaling and I have been having all sorts of weird problems. Well, I can tolerate the problems, but it's not that fun. Even for development purpose, all JetBrians' IDE's (including Android Studio) do not support Wayland, so they all look blurry. VS Code does not support Wayland by default either, so I had to search the web and do weird configurations to enable Wayland, and even then, IME does not work on Wayland VS Code, so I cannot type things like Japanese.

On the other hand, Apple Magic Trackpad 1 I have works just out-of-the-box. I could not achieve that under Windows, so under Windows, this Trackpad was basically a dumb touch pad. But under Gnome Wayland, I can use all the gestures smoothly.

  • Cool, after training to become a Microsoft Certified Engineer, I quickly became disillusioned with the whole ecosystem. I switched to Linux 15 years ago and never regretted a thing. My distro's of choice have been Ubuntu and Mint.

  • With the growth of SaaS, more and more will become available to any operating system that runs a browser.

  • For Microsoft Office, I've done just fine in the past with the web-based Office365. Microsoft seems to be committed to improving the web experience, and… I really haven't found an instance of where it failed for me.

  • One point that is always raised which I both agree with and disagree with, is customization. Yes, Linux is very good for being very customizable, which is good for people who want this, but it is little more than confusing for people who just want to install a system and work with it out of the box (such as in corporate environments).
I personally think a better way of putting this point would be to say that Linux is infinitely customizable for people who want to have their own look and feel, however, there are also several environments that you can use out of the box without customization. Like the Windows layout? Try cinnamon or KDE, like Mac OS? Pantheon and Gnome should be up your alley.

  • The whole Windows vs Linux thing is an interesting argument. I like both. Both have advantages and disadvantages. As long as an app has a web version then I think you’re mostly OK, apart from a few apps that just aren’t up to scratch in the browser. Linux certainly seems better (speed, longevity) if you’re running an older machine.

  • Linux has some major island issues but at this point Windows makes me feel miserable and I really don't want to touch it if I don't have to

  • There are a gazillion FREE tools for Windows to customize your keyboard shortcuts/run macros, programs … just say'n 😉
