Why Nokia and NASA Are Planning 4G/LTE Network on Moon?
NASA has chosen several partners to develop technologies for its next moon mission. One of the partners is Nokia, which will build a 4G network on the moon. Total 14 companies were awarded a total of $370 million. Nokia was awarded $14.1 million to deploy the first LTE/4G communications system in space.. The system will eventually be upgraded to 5G.
The system will provide faster and more reliable communication than the current system. Nokia says its technology will help future lunar astronauts in various tasks. Astronauts will be able to live stream HD videos from the lunar surface. It’ll also provide critical communications capabilities which include vital command and control functions and control of lunar rovers. Nokia’s lunar 4G system will be different from Earth’s 4G network. So instead of using large 4G towers, Nokia’s system would be compact and energy-efficient. 4G will work better on Moon because there will be no trees and buildings to interfere with signals. The new system will be able to withstand harsh lunar conditions. This 4G system in space will be built in late 2022
