  • When i left Windows 11, i went to Linux Mint because i hated what Canoncial is doing.
    Screw Canonical

  • Snaps and flat packs waste space and memory with redundant libraries in memory and on the drive at the same time. I went with MX now anyway and it is faster, more stable, and Debian based.

  • Strange they can't step back a bit and just say they lost track on what they doing with their distro.

  • 11:25 I have trouble believing that a simple if-statement to check whether a (equally or more recent) snap version is available to decide whether the repository version should even be offered or not, would be a major hang-up(?)

  • This doesn't really matter to me. I use Ubuntu Cinnamon at times, and I have already upgraded one of the installations to 23.10 dev a couple of weeks ago. It's surprisingly stable even at this point. But I don't use the snap store. I use Synaptic. It still shows all the debs in the repos. It also shows some snaps for programs such as Firefox, which are snap-only now on ubuntu. I always start testing the upcoming ubuntu release about 2 months before release. It's usually a disaster at this point, but not so far. As I continue to test it, nothing will surprise me. I expect big changes. Don't know if I'll like them or not. Right now, Debian Sid Cinnamon rules. Enjoyed the video, dude.

  • The all-snap Ubuntu desktop will be the official image in the future.

  • Unfortunately corporations strive for total control. That is why we see lock-down attempts everywhere. And the fact that software becomes more and more complicated, makes it difficult to fork – even if we can (like in free software). Past times were unusual in amount of freedom that we were given – even in proprietary sphere. And now we are seeing tightening of belt on our neck. 😉
I think the main problem is that people rarely think about the world from the perspective of freedom. Either we lack knowledge or time to do that (or both). That is why we get Spotify and Netflix instead of DOWNLOAD service which sells movies or music. Massive pushback towards such models, which is what we need, seems impossible because of this lack of time and lack of knowledge. Even Rossmann payed for YT only to discover that "downloading" from YT is not what would anybody expect.
My problem with Flatpaks and Snaps is lack of control over update process.

  • I don't like snap. But ace media stream only works in the snap package. That's why I'm forced to use snap.

  • An I the only one who doesn't like Snaps or Flatpacks? I think it made it much more complicated to install an app if you suddenly have 3 Clementines or so in the Appstore. I mean Linux is complicated enough. The only thing that was easier compared to Windows was that you just could type something like apt-get install something – and something got installed. And the same something was also found in the appstore.

  • i used synaptic package manager when i used ubuntu last instead of the software center

  • i dont use ubuntu already becouse i dont like the default desktop

  • Feel like ubuntu is going to drive away more with their snap centric mentality. Majority of linux users dont use ubuntu

  • snap store server is nonfloss ( non -free libre open source software). that is the problem 🙂

  • I ran a nala install on an Ubuntu 23.10 lxc container. It defaulted and installed firefox as a snap. Not sure if the same thing happens with apt, but it looks like they built it into nala.
