Windows Server 2022 per-VM licensing update April 2023 #microsoft

So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but on the 1st of April, Microsoft, instead of April Fool’s jokes, made Windows Server licensing in a virtual machine a little bit better. The first one is there’s no more 16-core-licenses minimum per client, which is a ridiculous requirement anyway, so you only need to license virtual machines with a minimum of eight cores per virtual machine. But the other thing is when your license virtual machines, you are now allowed to use Windows Server Standard licenses to license Windows Server Datacenter virtual machines. But. But! Big “but”: only when those licenses are purchased through CSP. So if you have an Enterprise agreement, you’re out of luck. You have to stick with the old rules.
