Windows Server CALs and Software Assurance on VPS in the #Cloud #microsoft

Windows Server CALs in the cloud are a bit complicated. It depends on whether you use bare metal servers or a Listed Provider or a public cloud. If you pay a provider for SPLA licenses then the only CALs that are required are RDS CALs for remote desktop solutions. Windows Server CALs are not required. But if you bring your own license according to the new per-virtual machine rules, Windows Server CALs are required, and Software Assurance is also required.

  • Just be careful if you use WinServ CAL from your E plan, which as far as i know it's a no go unless the provider platform provider it's an "Authorised Outsourcer" (even if it's not a bare metal, but a sole node tenant/ Citrix VDI)…correct me please if i am wrong
