Windows Server Downgrade and Down-edition

Windows Server offers ‘downgrade rights,’ allowing volume license holders to install any previous version of the software. This means you could purchase the latest Windows Server 2022 license and legally install even an ancient version like Windows Server NT 3.5.

‘Down editions’ are slightly different. With this right, you can use a higher edition license, such as Windows Server Datacenter, to deploy and license a lower edition, like Windows Server Standard.

A notable exception exists for those still utilizing Windows Server Enterprise virtual machines. Even though this edition is no longer available, it can be covered by current Windows Server Standard licenses.
