XP to Ubuntu with an 8yr old Hacktop – Computerphile
Rejuvenating an ‘ancient’ piece of technology for free with a new operating system. As Windows XP nears end-of-life, we look at whether we can re-purpose old bits of kit for free. Joe Nash gets hacking.

Crazy to see this in 2023
Lol they will pull the plug for windows 7 soon
Is that an old Dell 6400!?!?!?
Unetbootin really sucks
I always liked linux but hated how big of a pain in the ass it was to find drivers and etc. But I found linux mint and I will never go back to windows.
i used to have that exact model of laptop lol
*GNU/Linux
Ubuntu is great on old computers. I installed it on a 10 year laptop and put a new battery. The owner has been using it happily for the last 2 years.
Heck, I still use Pentium-era laptops with Debian on 'em.
Could you please talk a little bit faster, that way I won't understand anything you're saying =)
Hey so went with the "try ubuntu" option but I'm having trouble connecting to wifi.any tips ?
Three years later the NHS is still running on Ubuntu.
Silicon foam? Fancy. In most of the country we use Sellotape. It duct tape.
I have an old Compaq laptop running Windows XP with the following specs:
92 MB RAM
80 GB HDD.
It's running toooo slow. Which OS is best for it?
I installed ubuntu 14.04 on my Dell d620. I am unable to get the wifi to work. It works with the either net wired connection., and wifi works in Windows XP but not ubuntu. Any help appreciated.
i think i might have gotten an addiction to flash drives
I have to admit, Ubuntu is a good free OS. After my hard drive corrupted I decided to use Linux, but I found out that it can't run many of my games and apps. So I installed Win10 and learned how to dual boot, so I have both Win10 and Ubuntu. Yay!
Great video. I have a similar model to that old Dell amongst my old stuff. I'm putting Linux on mine too.
I have the exact same pc and i also switched to ubuntu
Oh snap, my first computer looked just like that one.
what if u have amd cpu
Is it possible to do this with an old Vista laptop. I would like to get it upgraded so I can run Minecraft or at least Chrome.
I'll try to find out how old it is, but so far this video is slightly hard to understand.
Install Gentoo
I've tried linux on an three year old ( dell 1558 ) laptop just as the warranty expired, it worked fine for a few months then it got fried for no apparent reason.
Some comment about what you did wrong
I used to have that computer. I spend many hours playing RoN on it.
When installing a new OS to such an old laptop / PC check first if there even is an option available to boot from USB in the BIOS. If you just happen to have a CD laying around, install it on there and dont bother installing it on USB.
I think this is the same as my laptop
when ever i installed it there was a 6/10 success rate id say haha
slow down
done a similar thing I call it the tinkerbook…video is at my channel!
Recently did this with an old IBM Thinkpad. It still runs a really old HP Laserjet 4 that my whole family uses to print documents, and I'm rather scared of leaving it running with Windows XP with no support for the OS. Runs absolutely perfect now with lubuntu and setting up printing was actually a lot easier than i thought it would be, considering every other machine that would be accessing it was Windows based.
An ssd and win10 would make this thing fly.
If you want to try linux, I suggest installing Gentoo
what hacktop
No need to de-frag in linux either and software is almost all free.
Less worry about viruses too.
Everyone over 50 should be given a free linux usb; have you ever tried using an older persons pc….?
What have they even been downloading……….
im running windows 10 on an identical pc and its wonderful. no hardware changes at all
Was any persistence created on the USB stick? When I use the Pendrivelinux Universal USB installer, it notes that the progress bar will not move while the persistence file is being created.
if you're watching on Chrome OS… um… something. just, uh, just do something. 🙂
