Saber rattle***
My old pc is a 6700k 16GB GTX1070.
OH MY GOD that is the exact computer model I'm using today in 2023 I've upgraded the ram to 12 GB but despite that an exact copy
Didn't see this at the time, but:
I took an old Optiplex series (lower tier than this, it's only a dual core) and loaded Plex Media Server on it, along with AdGuard, and then I build a Nextcloud instance on it.
I'm ripping DVDs on my gaming PC and using the DAV function within Nextcloud's server and the desktop app for Windows to just copy the rips from my gaming PC to the server.
1TB won't last much longer though. I may need to consider a 4TB external drive to keep up with what's going on.
pulseway is paid
but what if i want to serve hundred if not thousands of clients? 🙁
I dont know how i ended up watching this video tonight, BUT! You mentioned free geek. Where it all began for me around late 2002. Ahhh, those were the days. Thanks for the memories.
It was way more complicated than just using Linux and ssh, and too excessive. I’m pretty sure nobody here needs 12TBit of storage and faulty one in it’s own home server
but what if i lose my wifi!!!
P😊
Seagate drives are junk. Not reliable.
oh my god thanks smmm for this
Would this work with my Windows 2000 machine?
Are there Pulseway alternatives that aren't $30+ per month? Something more home user oriented?
oh my god. I have the SAME old PC as in the video
the only problem running your own server is the power consumption. Imagine a computer sucking 200w or so 24/7 365 days a year. It's not cheap on the electric bill. Using somehting small like a raspberry pie could be really tempting if only using it to save files on. And, if you're only using it to save files on it, jsut save stuff on CD's. you don't need tera bytes of memory, my parents barely gathered 1/2 TB over a decade of music, videos and photos. Jus burn some CD's into m-Disc. Lasts forever, and saves you a ton of money and hasle. YES that CD drive he pulled out ironically is better for most people than a server or a cloud.
Sorry if this is unrelated. I heard that the LO4618-800 PSU is compatible with the HP TP01-0066 that has the Erica mobo with 4 pin?LO4618-800 being so small for a desktop do you need an adapter for the external power cord or is it the standard desktop size?
a linux or freeBSD server video would be something I'd watch
Hi there, where is the link that you mention at 10:00? It's to do with creating a pool.
Why was this video so disliked? I love it.
Hey. Just a concern here. Im working with a 2GB duo core old laptop and I dont think it'ss be able efficietly handle all that. Could you please do a video for real old laptops
"Im allergic to dells BS" yup same here. XD
does it work on an old xp system?
To note, the older the hardware, the more benefits there are to be gained from using Linux, compared to Windows. There are also issues with Windows that make it incompatible with the role as a server, the main issue being security and privacy from authoritarian-style spying like what the NSA does.
These key downsides, as well as the lacking ecosystem has made Windows servers essentially obsolete when compared to Linux.
The summary for the non-tech folks who might want to explore using an old or underpowered machine as a server (the people who don't need to care about most of what I commented) is that if Windows is too much for the machine and you want extra performance/memory for server applications, then Linux is a good option, with the pre-condition being that you have time to explore the options and learn about Linux, it's capabilities, and what it has to offer.
This must be love 🧡
why is pulseway so expensive for privat use? cmon 25% of what you expect is a deal.
That means I dont have to install windows server
Great presentation!!!
I have core 2 duo machine with 1G of DDR3 and 160Gigs of HDD. And I'm watching this video
Very good video
Could you please re-visit this topic?
When you say "get it all set up"
How exactly did you get it to work with displayport? I have the exactly same pc with the exact same Cpu and couldnt get it to use displayport
Hhh
But If it can't run windows 10?? 3:09
This may have been mentioned in the video but, can this server be accessed publicly if not is there a way to do this through windows itself? and is there a way to merge multiple drives in a pc to create one MEGA drive?
pulseway does not let me sign up. they dont have a personal version anymore. you need a business email , company name, business type. it wont accept my gmail. are tthere good alternatives?
I took it a bit further by installing Windows server 2022 standard edition and the definition of free a trash computer and it's obviously pirated
for me your trash is my high end computer ,, damm .. life is running too slow for me
How old 😉
Yes but you electric bill will sky rocket.
i hate linus
Your Old PC is Your New Utilities cost black hole. : title fixed
Title is inverted: Your old Server is my new PC. hearing damage is not that bad though ahahhaha
Oddly enough I actually used to use my mom's old laptop as a server back in the day. Had the CLI version of CentOS installed on it and everything. Granted the only "server" I ran from it was a Minecraft server hosted by myself, but eventually I had to give it back to my mom once her newer laptop started dying
I Buy My Drives At WaterPanther! They Come With A Three Year Warranty And A 12 TB Is 130 US Dollars!! I Have 4 Of These Now And have had No Issues In 18 Months!
Just found this while messing around with my parents old pcs they asked me to get rid of. Thanks for giving me something to do with the newest one, i felt bad recycling them and now i can create my first server for cheap!!!!
Nice idea but some people at home have no need for a server.
Can i ssh to it?
