Hi Friends, I am Anshul Tiwari, and welcome to our youtube channel ITkFunde.

More about this video –
In this next video tutorial in our networking and infra concepts series we will learn about Active Directory.

Windows Active Directory aka windows AD is a hierarchal database where you organize, store, administer and secure your enterprise information for entities like employees, servers, printers, file directories, etc.

It is via the active directory that it’s decided what all resources within your domain would be able to access each other. This starts right from when you try to login into your laptop and office network. AD authentication checks whether you are a legitimate user or not.

We will start with a real-life example to understand how an active directory works and then explore its logical and physical architecture.

There are 5 key components that make active directory logical architecture –
1. Objects
2. Domains
3. OUs
4. Tree
5. Forest

We will learn about all these components and how it’s related to each other. We will also touch base on Windows AD physical architecture and how it works –

a. Domain Controller
b. Data Store
c. Schema
d. Database

By the end of this video, you will have a fair understanding of what is an active directory and how it works!

For a deep dive into advanced Active Directory concepts like installation of AD on Windows 2016 server etc, please refer to the documentation below –

  • Excellent vid – just prepping for an interview and wanted some concise background on AD. This hit the nail on the head, thank you my friend.

  • Thank you! I'm learning web dev, but came to this video with literally zero idea of what AD is, never heard of a forest, and you simplified it so clearly, I understood everything you laid out. Thanks a lot!

  • Great video anyone? Y when our users connect to azure VPN it connects to AD sites instead of Azure DC?

  • I swear, all the best IT videos are taught by Indians

  • thank you sir for the wonderful and easy explanation with abstract examples and corelating it with the subject

  • This is great! The only thing lacking is showing what you explained on a computer. Like this can be theory and practical can be, you showing exactly what you explained while navigating on your computer. This will help us understand even better! 🙂

    Thank you for the video!

  • One of the best virtual teacher i have ever had in my life! Thanks a lot for changing the view and me to not finding it so tough to understand! You made a dumbest fellow to understood the depth of the Active Directory – I just hope to crack down the interview tomorrow now! Hats Off God Bless Your Channel – IT K Fundey – Live Long!

  • hello sir, im beginner and im your new fans

  • I have a job interview in 1 hour and your video is helping me refresh. Thank you for posting this!

  • Thanks for information…I understood the basic of Active Directory.

  • so like this training video that I clicked “like” twice! No, not enough. Click again 😊

  • Oh good lord !!! Thank you for showing me this page. This is the besttt thing. I want to understand concepts easily and with diagrams I understand it easily. And this man is the bestt teacher i have ever seen. He explains so well. I will donate a chunk of my wealth to him.

  • the physical example sound alot like a authentication server like kurberos or radius.

  • 3:25 What counts as an entity? Because if I understood you correctly, objects are composed of smaller parts: their attributes. Different objects can share some of the same attributes, but no objects must share the exact same attributes, because if that was the case, there would be no way to distinguish them.

  • could you provide real code or directory look up?
White board explanation is good but please consider demo.

  • I really appreciate your tutorial . You're amazing and I am overwhelmed with how simple you made it to understand. I'm very glad I saw your page ❤

  • Thank you sir for making this process simple to understand !!

  • "This is the root of the tree" honestly just connected all the dots I was missing to understand trees & forests in a visual sense, thank you.

  • Awesome that somebody takes time to explain things on the whiteboard instead of jumping straght to the tools. Practice with no theory is not useful at all, thanks!
Question: do the 5 terms (Object, Domain, OU, Tree, Forest) on the whiteboard relate to the output of "netdom query fsmo"? Or I'm making the wrong binding in my mind?

  • Excellent simplified explanation of one of the most complex topic.

  • Damn, this feels way better than my college classes. Great work with sharing your knowledge with us, I appreciate that.

  • I just got here and will stay here because I like and understand how you break things down. Thanks
