  • Advertisers used compression for adverts on television because broadcasters would have signal strength limits and audio engineers for the adverts would compress the whole signal into the upper limits of the dB range to make the advert sound louder than the broadcast to command people's attention. I hear some recording studios do the same thing with singles to play on the radio and then even with album releases. It's even worse on YouTube because YouTube don't normalise the volume of uploads, like with replaygain on Foobar2000/DeaDBeeF, so some videos are recorded so quietly that you have to turn the volume right up and then an advert cuts in and blasts noise out of your speakers which makes listening to YouTube with insomnia somewhat precarious.
