windows server dhcp vlan
untangle is probably better but lacks support. Not everything can be found in forums and such.
Thanks Tom great review!
I just got me a protectli appliance. I'm probably going to give pfsense a try first and see how that goes for my home. Untangle seems like a great option as well.
The ntopng packaged with PFSense i.e. via the package manager is garbage as of Dec 2021. Manually installing ntopng using the latest version is like night and day and only takes a couple minutes. Point being you can get pretty good reporting from PFSense, if you don't count on the official packages.
Hi Tom. Love your videos. I went FULL blown UniFi about two years ago but since they have continued to have issues, I'm now running Untangle on a U150 appliance with Grand Stream APs. Keep the videos coming!
should work on your audio balance between preroll/channel info roll and your content video
pfsense is a nightmare.. much like sonicwall, and I really dislike sonicwall, trying to find a direct/semi direct replacement, im not seeing pfsense being that.
Tom , any plans to do a vlan setup and web filter policy’s on untangle ? I know you have a hand full of pfsense ones but could not find any untangle videos. Thanks !!
stopped watching after license fee lol
Hey Tom
Great videos. We moving from Sophos to Untangle
Here because I recently tried a dive into pfsense… Admittedly I'm a network noob, but honestly the frustrations are mounting and have been since install. Without this channel and other links I would have given up on it awhile ago. I did finally get it up and running but when it comes to setting up gaming systems, grab the advil. Its hard to get past strict nat types on most gaming systems without enabling upnp (which I'd rather not do), and its apparently been a lonnng ongoing issue with only a few hit or miss options. Just try a google search and see for yourself. I also tried setting up IPV6 but apparently the upgrade from 2.4 to 2.5 "broke" the system, so they said. I tried to follow along with the threads for the patch, while crunching more advil, but my head was swimming. Hopefully the next release gets it ironed out. I get the fact that its not a plug and play "consumer" router, but get ready to dig into google when you have a problem. Most of the guys who play with these things really know what they're doing more than me, and hats off to them for all the time they volunteer trying to keep us simpletons from going under. Just be forewarned that there is a learning curve when something doesn't work right out of the gate.

Solarwinds123 for the win!!!
Thanks Lawrence for all these videos. Does using DNS filtering on pfsense (for web/application filtering) has slower responses in general?
Secondly, @14:12 are you still using/suggesting Solarwinds for end point management? Specially after the recent breach?
Spreadsheet row18 should be spelled INTEGRATION, not Intergration….. sorry, just a stickler for spelling and grammer….
Thank you for a great video, really nice comparison.
Which firewall would you suggest for a small web hosting setup for 1-2 physical servers running approximately 10 VMs serving public content? Thank you
Thank you for another nice video!
Once I want to see real firewall comparation.
Not GUI, UX or functions only, but deep backend (how packets are handled, how secure are handled, SYN flood toughness, integration into OS, etc.), frontend (GUI, UX) and the main thing – to tell that firewall is not just ON or OFF but almost everything is about defining right rules for every single specific case (and therefore enduser/BFU can't deploy it anyway).
Never mind the features and ease of use, which one is actually more secure? PF sense, untangle, or the ubiquity line?
pfsense only has a PARTIAL implementation of SQM
You seem to have confidence in what you show and you seem to have worked those combos for a while; however you only pop up reviews and no actual showcase from start to finish with a complete guide doing something useful
I've come from Fortinet / Sophos (Astaro) and pfSense is very impressive. It's great to work with a device that you don't have to translate bullshit marketing terms back to a correct term.
e.g. "Business Rule" vs inbound NAT
Agree on the one device thing. Hence UTM.
Btw, this channel and its videos is why I chose to try out Untangle! 😀
Untangle has been awesome for me at home as well as other places I have installed it, Pfsense is good too, but the learning curve for it makes my brain turn to mush….even just for virus scanning and proper setup of a Squid cache lol. Pfsense is VERY command line driven, while Untangle needs a subscription for a lot of features…but makes their implementation so much simpler to do and adjust settings on. Though this isn't me saying that one product is better than the other, they both have their best uses 🙂
Really enjoy your content, thank you! I stumbled across this just now randomly on reddit for managing multiple PfSense & OpnSense FW's centrally. Obviously this doesn't change that it isn't integrated but I didn't even know it was possible. https://dynfi.com/
Just got a SG-1100 today, Currently running pfsense on an Intel based desktop. Can I use the config file backup from the desktop and restore it to the SG-1100? Thanks for any help.
A few things missing from the chart. Untangle has Gateway AV via BitDefender and a they roll their own “Cloud Sandboxing”.
Edit: just realized you showed my post on the Untangle Forums regarding their aliases.
been using pfsense for year and I love it. it a bit complex but they very good documentation
I've used both but just never got the love for untangle.
PFSense though.. LOVE IT! over 10 years and counting..
Does untangle do vlan tagging yet? Do they do network bonding yet? These basic features were lacking in untangle last I tried it.
