GNOME Foundation Funding Situation Is…

Recently the GNOME Foundation president put out a blog post regarding the state of funding in the foundation and the massive deficit the foundation has been running for the past few years.

  • Don't just believe what your favorite talking head says, whether that be Nicco, Lunduke or (I don't know why he would be) me.

If you care about this situation read the GNOME reports, read the KDE reports, read the GNOME plan and come to your own conclusion. There's no need to start a flame war over the funding of a desktop environment. If you don't care, enjoy your day.

We've all come to different conclusions on the matter and that's ok, that's why I always try to link my sources so you can do your digging into the topic.

  • Ever since the introduction of Gnome Shell, the team has always been somewhat hit-and-miss.

  • I think Linux development would go much more smoothly if Gtk and Gnome didn't exist: Change my mind.

  • I mean they’re funding situation shows currently KDE desktop is way ahead of them and technology advancements and HDR is a game changer. They’re unknown 46 I believe and they still so no signs of adding HDR support or any other advance options like KD has.

  • Between shaman directors, GTK shenanigans, Gimp, Wayland, lack of accessibily work and asshole culture, Gnome can go fuck themselves. I aint donating to assholes.

  • On one hand i LOVE gnome. on the other hand, gnome maintainers are insufferable people and talking to them is like talking to a wall.

  • Mean tbh a million isnt that much in grand scheme

20 workers full time would exhaust that completely in wages

    That's underpaying

  • So, kinda tangential, but I'm personally hoping this proves true for creative writing as well. My plan, which almost certainly won't work, is to have a "Free and Open-Source Series" where I use a CC license and list a repo with all my world and character notes and stuff ready when by the time I finish the edits and publish. I'm REALLY hoping that the donate button on the site means I can at least break even. We'll see if that works there 🙂

  • Note that when talking about operating environments, if you start making Thunderbird style popups in GNOME or KDE, you're dangerously close to the Windows11 advertisement debacle just when people are pointing and laughing at Microsoft for implementing ads in their product.

Yes yes, KDE and GNOME are free – that doesn't mean we should accept popups in your DE begging for donations.

  • Shaman sisters, we got too cocky.
Jokes aside, why can't Debian or Fedora (both use GNOME as the default DE) donate more?

  • financial situations could make humans do desperate stuff. here is the solution, i actually have no problem with linux distro harvesting some or certain type of data from the user , the problem is, the SECURITY SIDE of it. the risk of those data could be misused. but if they culd ensure the security and the PROFESSIONALISM and ETHICS on their side, i dont see why they cant use anonymous "consumer usage" data to sell to other companies. because we all know these distros need to pay for their operation.
so long they can be honest, and ethical, its fine if they want to monetize my usage.

  • The danger with this approach is if desktop environments become nagware and if we end up with a donate or be nagged approach.

  • I remember the last time the gnome foundation ran out of money because they spent it on diversity and inclusion efforts instead of development

  • If you can, donate to your favorite FOSS projects!

  • i dont understand why the gnome foundation needs to be a thing? what happened to open source. you know, people doing things because they want to make the world better instead of making an easy living an taking your donations for their salary.

why does the gnome foundation needs executives, marketing people and all that stuff? in todays times i completly stopped giving open source projects money because there are too many marketing people or activists in the game that only prey on donation money. just like in the real world.

i dont give money to ANY non profit anymore. i am not there to give these people their salary.

  • I'm surprised considering that gnome is used in practically every enterprise distro.

  • Money at rest is not helping linux and not helping developers. I guess clear indication is useful, but a nonprofit should spend their money as soon as they have a good cause.

  • Maybe with 1 million euros more they will manage to remove the remaining features of the DE.

  • NO ONE should fund GNOME until they fix their shit. They literally hired a "Professional Shaman" as a new Executive Director amongst a range of other questionable decisions. They are the Mozilla of the Linux worldd.

  • I actually run a community interest company, imo the only years you should be in a deficit like that are your startup years. If you want growth you need to be proactive and seek money, either by offering donationware, making people aware they can donate or even offering a paid service which you can do in a CIC, not sure about the rest of the world but you are allowed to run a CIC like a business in the UK so long as the profits benefit the community rather than the directors. My biggest concern with that sort of shortfall is the desperation, and when companies get to donate to causes that are desperate, they get to attach strings.

  • Considering the GNOME popularity and usage, and the need for constant and high in quality development, I wouldn't say 1 mil.$ per year is too much of a budget.
So, they should focus on attracting more income – speak with big companies, who may be willing to donate, speak with the users, ask for donations – I would not mind, if there is a call to donate on the GNOME Software app, and I will probably chip in, and many other people will do it too.
So, it's not a drama of spending too much. Actually it's the opposite – it shows how underfinanced the FOSS community is. And we need to change that, if we care.
