About this video: This video is our step-by-step guide on how to make a modded Minecraft server in 1.17.1. Specifically, we show you how to make a Forge server in 1.17.1 to start playing modded Minecraft with your friends. Now, this modded server isn’t really designed for modpacks. This is because modpacks usually have custom modded server setups. However, we will teach how to start a server that can run a few mods. So, without anymore delay, here is how to make a modded Forge Minecraft server in 1.17.1!
The first step of getting a Forge server is actually installing Forge locally. You can find our complete guide on how to do this linked above. Your friends will also have to do this as well.
Once you have Forge 1.17.1 installed locally, we can download the modded server files. You can find a link to download Forge in the description above. Once you are there, click on the green ‘Download Forge’ button. That will take to Forge’s download page where you want to make sure 1.17.1 is selected and then click download installer. That will take you to a page where you will click skip in the top right and save the file.
After you have the installer downloaded, create a new folder on your desktop called ‘Forge Server’. Then, right-click the installer, click open with, and select Java. When you are in the installer, click on ‘Install Server’. A red box will appear. Click the three dots in the red box, and select the folder on your desktop. Now, click okay. The Forge server files will then install.
Open the folder you created on your desktop, and you will have a ‘run.bat’ file in it. Click that, and then some more things will download. However, the start-up will fail. You will now have a ‘eula.txt’ file though. Open this file, and change ‘EULA=false’ to ‘EULA=true’. Then, double click the run.bat file again. Your modded Minecraft server will now open up running 1.17.1!
At this point though, your friends cannot join your server. For them to join, they will need to install Forge locally, and you will need to port forward. Specifically, you will need to forward port 25565 on the TCP and UDP protocols. We go over exactly how to do this in the video!
