LF Edge: Building an Open-Source Framework for the Edge with Jason Shepherd

The number of IoT devices is expected to grow to 75 million by 2025 and expected to impact every industry and job. Each device brings its own set of hardware & software components and architecture. For an enterprise deploying multiple devices, this fragmented approach is costly to maintain, increases the likelihood of security vulnerabilities, and limits the pace of adoption and innovation. Open-source software has been vital in addressing these challenges for cloud computing. Can open source do the same for IoT and Edge Computing?

For this meetup, we are honored to host Jason Shepherd, Board Member, LF Edge Foundation, and VP of Ecosystem, Zededa. Jason will be sharing the background to why LF Edge Foundation exists, the projects currently supported by LF Edge, and his (and LF Edge’s) perspective on what the future looks like for open-source in IoT and IoT-enabled industries.

About Jason
Jason Shepherd is VP of Ecosystem at edge orchestration company ZEDEDA. Prior to joining ZEDEDA, Jason was CTO for the Dell Technologies Edge and IoT Solutions Division. His proven track record as a thought leader in the market is evidenced through his leadership in building up the award-winning Dell IoT Solutions Partner Program and establishing the vendor-neutral, open-source EdgeX Foundry project to facilitate greater interoperability at the IoT edge. Jason is a board member for LF Edge and was recognized as one of the Top 100 Industrial IoT influencers in both 2018 and 2019. He holds a total of 40 granted and pending US patents.

About Zededa
Zededa, Inc. designs and develops enterprise software. The Company focuses on a cloud-native approach to the deployment, management, and security of real-time edge apps. Zededa serves energy, automotive, and industrial automation industries in the United States.

About LF Edge
LF Edge is an umbrella organization that aims to establish an open, interoperable framework for edge computing independent of hardware, silicon, cloud, or operating system. By bringing together industry leaders, LF Edge will create a common framework for hardware and software standards and best practices critical to sustaining current and future generations of IoT and edge devices. They are fostering collaboration and innovation across the multiple industries, including industrial manufacturing, cities and government, energy, transportation, retail, home, and building automation, automotive, logistics, and health care — all of which stand to be transformed by edge computing.
