My Mate DE on EndeavourOS shows only 410MB on HTOP, torpedoing all the other DEs outta the water!

Manjaro is also a contender for the "greenest" distro, along with Mint, Ubuntu mate, and open SUSE.

Using Pipenv with the default python cauzes various problems(normal module not found, they remove those) I have to compile from sources.

Nice review, but it's missing the versions of Ubuntu Cinnamon and Ubuntu Kylin 20.10.

Trisquel 9 has been released this week too. It would be nice to see a review of Trisquel 9 with the both DE: MATE and LXDE.

Isn’t the whole point of Linux is your choice of your software? Sudo apt instal vim && sudo apt instal hstop doesn’t sound that hard

Hey DT, a few months ago you said that you were never again going to show GNOME on your channel, until they change their policy about reverse *ism. Very disappointed that you did not keep your promise 🙁

I don't use Vim, thunderbird or htop at all…just more bloat I'd have to remove.

DistroTube: "if this distro doesn’t have Htop and Vim (the latter of which I know nothing about) out of the box then it doesn’t deserve my respect"

    790+ mb idle? No thanks.

I’ll stick with bspwm and a sub 200mb idle.

If gnome got down to 500-600 I’d consider it. I just can’t justify a DE anymore after using a minimal environment… it doesn’t seem like I’m getting anything in return of the resources spent.

I do admit gnome looks beautiful. But the workflow still feels clunky to me and the lag of the launcher is off-putting coming from dmenu or rofi. Also, gnome tweaks…. it’s a disaster… If that were implemented in a cleaner, more unified way and the launcher was fixed I would be interested.

    Different strokes I suppose.

I am truly happy that there is another Arch user out there, who also likes Ubuntu. I don't get all the hate, it's a god darned wonderful distro. (And so is Arch, btw)

I'm guessing then that you're likely gonna pick Lubuntu, if you had to choose between them?

It'll also be interesting to see what you think of the 20.10 versions of those spins that are hoping to become official flavours, like Cinnamon and DDE.

What? Get rid of the bottom panel on Mate? You can't do that! 🙂 Also, doesn't evolution do email on Mate?

I think the stock GNOME Ubuntu should ship more of the default GNOME apps. After all, Ubuntu is supposed to be newbie friendly, and newbies would surely appreciate having easy to use utilities like Maps, Clocks, Contacts and maybe even Boxes available OOTB.

As far as desktop aesthetics, Ubuntu Budgie is the closest competitor to Kubuntu.

Redshift it the cool thing) And also Ubuntu has a night mode, that works even better. Ubuntu, in my opinion, is a very friendly desktop and its environment.

so i've noticed a thing in your video and it reminded me what i'm most often bothered by in the default ubuntu 20.04 lts gnome de: application names are weird!
want to view images? you guessed it, use "eog"! how about files? "nautilus"! pdfs? oh, we got you covered — "evince"!
…except that you never get to see those names if you just use plain default gnome and don't go to the "info" section. it's all covered up with conventional normal names.
when i was first fiddling around with ubuntu and installed xmonad i had no idea how to open up my file manager (couldn't be bothered to use ls, idk) because dmenu didn't find anything named like "file manager", because "nautilus" gets converted into "file manager" by the gnome de! a bit annoying.

im quickly becoming fond of LXQt… It has few deps and compiles very easily. QTerminal doesnt use vte and the interface theming is very good because of the toolkit. LXQt users prefer trojita because thunderbird is big and bloated and all that stuff, and it uses gtk+, which doesnt fit like a glove in lxqt
