Mini PC OpenMediaVault NAS

OpenMediaVault (OMV) NAS set up on a Bmax B1 Plus mini PC, although the method shown will work with any x86 hardware with a 64-bit CPU and 1GB+ of RAM. Access is demonstated in Windows 11, ChromeOS Flex and Linux Mint.

My previous review of the Bmax B1 Plus is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGcWLgAk5kA

OpenMediaVault is available from: https://www.openmediavault.org/

Balena Etcher (to write the ISO to a USB drive) is available from: https://etcher.balena.io/

I looked at the HP Elitedesk 800 G2 reconditioned small form-factor PC in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPX3A7YS-6Q

And Chrome OS Flex in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFAg1FkGgMM

Oh, and finally, my most recent Raspberry Pi (OMV 6) NAS video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWDBYDYJVrA

  • Could you show an active use case for PeerTube on one of these Small Form Factor x86 PCs?

  • So i noticed that you used Etcher instead of something like Rufus. What got you to use that instead? I do notice that the UI for Etcher is a lot more clean, but any other reasons? This is just out of curiosity btw. Nothing against you for your choices.

  • I liked the look and feel of OpenMediaVault but if I had Windows on the computer already, I would have just setup File Sharing using Windows. I think the Workstation flavors of Windows only allow 10 simultaneous connections but on a home network you're probably not going to get that many anyway.

  • Took a little tinkering to make sure my gigabyte brix booted right into omv before I re-located it, turned out it needed a new 2032 battery – but no complaints it was only £35 . Sharing a drive that is already formatted and had stuff on I wanted to share, not delete was a slightly different process but found the answer on the OMV forum and it all works a treat. Only thing is I get very fast transfer speeds on computers connected via ethernet cable to the router but only about 5mb/sec transfer speeds on other network computers, even over powerline ethernet which are supposed to be upto 200mbps?? Any ways to boost speed?

  • I think the trend is more and more to have mini computers and a lot of time im from brazil

  • Thank you for being so organized and a top-notch teacher. Much appreciated!

  • Yo Explaining Computer. As usual a fantastic video .

I want to as you a silly question : why don't you use a ventoy app on USB pendrive to install multiple OS ISOs on it .

Can you make a video on it as a tutorial for your viewers

  • STILL no Raspberry Pi 5s available here in Ohio, Sir! – don’t worry! – I KNOW it’s not your fault! Lol 🙂

  • This video and the others on the channel about setting up a NAS is the clinic on the NAS topic❗

  • Scarily timely – I was looking for just this sort of functionality but would never have come up with this solution which looks perfect for what I want. Many (!!!) thanks Chris.

  • Thanks Chris. Great Video. Must look at some of the older hardware I have sitting around my home office

  • My humble thanks !! I would never have made this thing work without this excellent tutorial !!

  • Hi Chris, as always this is an amazing video. I do wonder why you don't like password managers though. 👍

  • Is there a way to get data from android devices on such a NAS? Google is complaining that I'm reaching the limit.

  • Thank you for another video (love the ducks). I want to use a mini pc as a NAS home media server/streamer/music storage system. Am I right in thinking OMV will allow me to do this?

  • Excellent! This tutorial enabled me to set up a NAS step by step. Thank you!

  • Hey, Chris – can you state the BIOS settings that made this work for you?
I have OMV 6.5.0 – the setup boots fine from USB, but after it says it is configuring the network using IPv6, it hangs – nothing but a blue screen with one line of gray at the bottom – nothing appears ever again, and I have to FORCE a restart. Exact same unit that you are using in this video, that being BMAX B1+
Can you or anyone else help? To me, it seems that OMV is not compatible with this PC, but I see you setting YOUR one up, and it is the same unit, but mine crashes during install. 😞
Have tried changing the BIOS from "Windows" OS to "Intel Linux" OS and back again – same thing – just crashes during setup. 😭

  • Excellent video as always, Chris. 🙂
Can you do a video on setting up users?
Perhaps you already have – if anyone else or you are reading this and know EC has done a video about setting up users in OMV, please can you link it here.

  • As someone who's not a cyber security expert, I hope you'll do a follow up tutorial on improving OMV NAS security by restricting user access

  • What are the differences between OMV and TrueNAS?

  • Did not know about OpenMediaVault, I've always set up my NAS computers with pure Debian but this video did indeed spawn some ideas like you said

  • The latest version of this software did not work on my brand new (11/2023) BMAX B1 Pro purchased from Amazon. I had to drop back to the most recent stable version and now it is running fine. I'm sure that it will be fixed in the near future, but I don't want to waste more time on the bleeding edge. Thanks for another great video. This was my first implementation of OpenMediaVault and it will not be my last.

  • Great lesson in openvault. I'll look into doing an ov raid unit. Much thanks

  • I had endless problems with OMV on the pi. Permissions kept randomly changing, the thing kept crashing, it kept losing drive mounts and then filling the system drive so it wouldn't boot… it was a nightmare. In the end I just put debian on it and ran everything in docker containers and never looked back. It was rock solid ever since.

  • At 4:30
    "4 3 2 1 Thunderbirds are go!"

There is more to our beloved Chris than meets the eyes!!

[I believe that he was referencing the stop motion cartoon Thunderbirds]

  • Thanks as always Chris. OpenMediaVault has really come a long way since you first introduced me to it!

  • I’ve got to admit this YouTube channel is a guilty pleasure for me.

  • Proper computing, indeed! Although I would also accept amber-on-black as an acceptable answer.

  • I don't get it.
Surely no-one wants a nas with one drive and no raid ?
    Or am I missing something.

  • You make this all look so easy, thank you, brilliant as always.

  • Thanks for posting this, a really good video and very easy to follow.
Strange thing for me though, I have an older Dell machine that won't boot the OMV installation from USB. I can boot Ubuntu from the same USB, but not OMV.
    I'll keep trying though.

  • Great!
can I access this from another network? (like this is set up at home, and I want to access from office)

  • @ExplainingComputers Love your style of presenting the video. Way cool. Will look into omv

  • I always thought that connecting a shared folder would have been very difficult on ChromeOS as everything is in the cloud and you would need a separate service to do that.

  • I have been using NFS for years for my file server and backup server. What would I gain anything by switching to OMV? All Linux workstations on my network.

  • Doesn't opening a share to Google Chrome OS (not open source Chromium OS) allow Google to access your data? I wouldn't trust 'em.
