TailScale – Your Own Virtual Private Network

In this video we’ll look at how to setup TailScale on Windows and Linux.

From https://tailscale.com/

A secure network that just works
Zero config VPN. Installs on any device in minutes, manages firewall rules for you, and works from anywhere.

And they’re not kidding. No need to port forward while you’re using TailScale. Access your devices from anywhere with a network connections with minimal setup!

For Synology devices go here and find the correct package for your device: https://github.com/tailscale/tailscale-synology/releases

It’s my understanding that not all devices are supported, but I got it working on my DS1621xs+ using the tailscale_1.8.3_amd64.spk file

  • Does it work grow “outside” like from
A mobile phone on cellular? (Not connected to the local network)

  • What happens if the computer restarts and you need to access it remotely? You won't be able to until tailscale is open first. Is there a solution for that?

  • This reminds me when playing via LAN remotely with friends many years ago (via Hamachi, I think was the name of that service)

  • This is great. Straight to the point, no bs, and the best is that it works!

    Thank you so much

  • I think the only problem with tailscale is that you end up having a myriad of endpoints to maintain the software releases on as they're pushed out and I think it would get tedious to do this constantly or across the board be it monthly or even irregularly. The introduction video to tailscale is good David, so thanks for that as I had come across it but never taken the time to check it out properly, I just don't like dishing out counterparty risk to a 3rd party when it comes to security or my network, but for a simplistic/hand offs solution for other people that are happy with it, I say go. for it.

I've used wireguard via pivpn for a while now and the setup was not complex or complicated to do (curl bash script && install && a few iptables rules) and we're golden.

  • Seriously. It passes me off. U dunno how to explain normally. Ur jus waffling ffs

  • So is the connection to Tailscale encrypted automatically, like when I connect to my Tailscale account, or do I need to use the Public IP address to create an encryption key in the Wire Guard App, then set up a public key for all the clients and yada yada yada in the Wire Guard App? Just wondering.

  • I have installed everything, but cant figure out how to use it? So the other machine must be accessed through a browser not the app?? How can you access through a browser with just an IP address, there must be millions of the same IP address out there, how can the browser find the other machine?
    Confused

  • But when you type the IP address into the browser how does the browser know to find the IP address of the Tailscale other machine? There must be millions of the same IP addresses out there?

  • I really like your videos and enjoy them, but I have to give up on that part when you are switching between Windows and Linux or Docker. my problem is I am currently being NAT'd by our ISP's CGNAT with a private IP, I can not use DDNS to have access to my router, access to my IP cameras, not able to use my OpenVPN or Wireguard server on my router from my outside network, not being able to use my cloud storage connected to my router, etc. and they are not supporting me at all and I can't find any secure way to have this problem fixed.

    Please advise,
    Thank you.

  • Awesome stuff, I checked it for docker connection but now i can share anything over tailscale, even my media server and the speed is awesome

  • Amazing tutorial! Unfortunately, was not able to see my OMV login page when I entered the IP address assigned…any thoughts?

  • So easy to setup, so seamless to work. Makes my security alarm bells ringing, who really owns Tailscale… 😅

  • Thanks for the detailed video. I have adguard running on my pi – is there a way to add it to tailscale so that I can continue to block ads even while away from home?

  • Hey mate, love your work… im fully setup accessing my services remotely BUT my truenas shares, Would you have a tutorial on how to do this?

  • Tailscale is great. With trusted users I have shared my machine as such and works flawlessly. What I want to know is how do I share just one docker container with certain users? Ie emby port 8096 not anything else?

  • Thank you. I have just installed on 5 of my machines. just learning now and this helps😀

  • Tailscale says its connected but nothing happens at the ip address or with the port. I'm trying this with Jellyfin but literally nothing works!!!

  • Hey David can you make a video about how to install Tailscale in a docker container? For example together with pihole/ Adguard? So you can use there DNS.

  • Great info, I successfully managed to instal this to the main server of my Proxmox node but im struggling with the other containers. It installs but gives me an error when trying to run Tailscale up. Can anyone help?

  • Back to basics. Now that I have my Window laptop connected to my Synology NAS at home, what app would you suggest to copy files between devices ? I thought it would be dead easy but it's a bit less obvious that I thought it would be.

  • you can absolutely bypass geoblock and communicate with the internet using tailscale. Its called an exit node.

  • I have CGNAT ISP and i can not make work plex server remote acess, Tailscale is able to make work ? Please help me

  • Can I invite users & grant them specific device access only? Please make a follow video.

  • Looks super COOL and POWERFUL. Now if I could just come up with a USE CASE for it. 😁

  • I've looked around I don't even know how many videos, tutorials, guides and what have you and still I couldn't manage to get everything to work as intended. 15 minutes of this lovely fella just made my day and I'm now tailscaling everything lol

  • Thank you so much! This got me started very fast

  • How did you get your EMBY to show up? I have been trying to get my Jellyfin to show up with zero success.

  • Hey, thanks for all the videos. I have learned and implemented a lot.
Could you do a Netmaker tutorial with NPM?
I think people would be interested in that.
Thanks, keep up the good work

  • amazing how you don't have more subscribers. your like the classic techie

  • Love this software and this video explains all I need to know thank you

  • Great video, as always. Question, what Synology are you running the VM's on?

  • Thank you, sir! I just wanted to watch my Jellyfin server away from home and could never get the reverse proxy to work. This was so much easier.

  • So they see all your traffic and have access to everything at no charge. Like google but they wont sell your information. Sounds like BS but live your dream.
