Ubuntu 20.04 VS Windows 10 SOTTR RTX 3090 benchmark

With the RTX 3090 release, we take a look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider in both Ubuntu and Windows! Watch the video in 4k 60fps for the greatest detail level.

I used the following Nvidia drivers throughout this video:
Ubuntu with 455.23.04
Windows with 456.71

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is running with DirectX11 and DirectX12 in Windows, and on Linux it’s running Vulkan (which under the hood is translating DX12/DX11 calls).

I maxed out the game by setting it to Ultra, then manually setting Screen Space Contact Shadows to High and Screen Space Reflections to ON.

On Ubuntu, the overlay is by MangoHUD. On Windows, the overlay is by MSI Afterburner. The main fps counter is the game’s own internal fps counter.

All benchmarks and recordings were done with the game being in fullscreen mode.

Game recording was done externally using an Atomos Ninja V (https://amzn.to/34Gcq8O). No performance loss this way, since the Atomos just captures HDMI output externally (it’s a physical device outside of the computer).

I hope I have not made any mistakes. Took about two weeks to make this video. The tests were redone a number of times, to ensure no anomalies appeared in the results.

Feel free to share your experience in the comments below, but I do ask that you at least run through the same settings in the benchmark as I have to keep your experience as close as 1:1 to that of my own if you have discrepancies.

Feel like I might have missed any important information or have questions, or additional information you want to share? Post it in the comments!

This video is recorded at 2160p (4k) 60fps, via an Atomos Ninja V.

If you love action adventure puzzle games, have been following Lara Croft for years, then Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a must get for your Linux gaming library!
