I have to agree with you on the Gnome thing. It… Really doesn't bother me. She's not a coder, she's managing the community and stuff. The coders are doing all the good work for gnome. I'll continue to use Gnome and be comfy with it.
Great video as always!
4:51 "experience in management and leading nonprofits is way more valuable than the ability to write code"
I'm not sure. Who needs developers for a non-profit software company!? Managers can easily implement features/fix bugs with their outstanding capability to manage. They can manage so well, nobody even needs to write a single line of code
2:30 "flagship software like…" yeah, don't install any of that crap anyway
What a dumb decision…seems like an Apple, HP and Adobe (among others) attitude: force people to use or behave the way the want. This will be really bad for Ubuntu (they will loose users and gain a lot less new installations). Just an awfully decision…
What a wild ride. Nouveau went from being the best Nvidia driver on Linux, then later was restricted by the signed firmware from newer Nvidia GPUs, but now it's shaping up to make a comeback!
I know I saw ubuntu just drops unity desktop, old appcenter, ubuntu tv, and others that sad. Ubuntu get new snap and new app center from Flutter. I not use ubuntu. I turn vanilla os with gnome 100% awesome!!
I agree with you about the executive 100% experience as a developer would be nice I guess but totally not a requirement for a position like that. Her experience in her personal religious life just adds diversity to her personal background and to the team, that's a good thing.
I have noticed it, and I had to install the GNOME software to install .dpkg. This Ubuntu version solved a problem but brought others. 😢
canonical starts to feel less like a competent entity and more like an incel waving around a stick and screaming why their solution is just superior. a bit like microsoft but even more pathetic.
Yeah I had to use the command line to install astrill vpn on ubuntu 23.10. I was under the impression that the app was not supported on the new ubuntu release. However I remembered that its possible to install app package via terminal. A complete newbie might never figure it out and get frustrated which is understandable. I do like the mantic minotaur release. It works perfectly fine on my laptop otherwise. Other distros I was having a lot of issues.
a lot of problems would be fixed if distros and their communities didnt stoop down to windows user level. linux is for the technical know how people
nice to know they are trying to modernize opensuse. yast is a pain for like no reason
I actually like Ubuntu dropping double click .deb installations ALOT.
Let user spend 5 min right away and find out it's more like on a smartphone here, which should be very familiar even to the least technical people.
Else the first thing they will google is how to add execute permissions to a file, no bueno.
First user installs Chrome and Discord .deb, next he executes every single thing downloaded from the shadiest banner on the shadiest website.
This is exactly how he did things on Windows, MS never pushed store/winget on him. They should and it's never late, it is the least MS can do to unfvk two decades of teaching users the worst ways to use a computer.
Thanks to ubuntu&redhat, linux started to make small steps to become proprietary "OS" crap like because they started to implement apple "bullcrap" things.
What Ubuntu did is excellent in my opinion. Because downloading deb/rpm packages from the internet is mostly insecure and may damage the whole Linux system specially for beginners who aren't that familiar with the Linux ecosystem. So it is good not to install deb packages with a single click. This is the way that most Windows systems get malware.
Noobs got to git gud, oh no.
Which linux distro is the best in 2023 for web development and daily usage.
………………….
6:30 then revamp the looks of it, not the whole thing. Functionally it is top-notch. Like, what is the obsessiveness today to ditch what works and make it anew vs actually fixing proven and tested programs that have worked for years and even decades? Also screw the effing hamburger menu. Put it where it makes sense. An installer is not. Much less when you throw an enormous scrollable list
The ubuntu .deb thing is a major issue. It took me a long time to move over to Linux. One of the big stumbling blocks at the time, besides the Nvidia GPU, was how to load things on to the computer when not using repositories. Things like appimages, flatpaks and .deb. Instructions on how to use Linux was way above my head for years, till the instructions became easier to understand. I never enjoyed Ubuntu as a newbie, found it hard to work with. This will just make it worse. I found Linux Mint Cinnamon edition is more user friendly for a newbie that doesn't know much about computers and is used to windows. If it were not for the fact that I at least knew how to put my own OS on my computer, especially about 4/5 years ago, I wouldn't been able to figure somethings as I go along. Even now if it were not for google I'd be lost.
The problem with the new hire in the GNOME foundation is that too many people listen to Brian Lunduke
What is up with Ubuntu lately? Yet again, another anti-user decision: don't let the user install Deb's. Are you serious? That is one of the strengths of Debian based systems like Ubuntu: being able to easily install 3rd party software via a deb.
Really disappointed in Ubuntu now. They seem to be going the way of Apple: lock everything down behind a walked garden and remove the tools that would allow the USER to install stuff from anywhere. Because the user is too dumb to know for to manage their own system, right? 🤦🤦🤦🤦
I am SO GLAD to be using LMDE! A real OS where the user ID the boss and has freedom. 🙌
blud thinks he is a real shaman 💀
Hey Nick. One of your eyes looking reder than the other.
Shamanism is a con. It's antiscience. She is either a con artist or credulous
openSUSE may use calamares
Strongly disagree with the statement that executives do not need knowledge in the field they are leading. They might not have to be development experts but knowing how the specific industry works, what the conventions are, what the stakeholders needs are etc. is crucial. That varies immensely between disciplines.
Why would anyone want to install deb packages from a website? You have app centers to install software. Package type doesn't matter. Installing deb packages from a website is for sure the windows way of installing software, but should be avoided in most cases, so removing the ability from a gui application is as step up in security. Pro users can still use the cmd line to install the package – everyone else should install the (flatpak) package via the app center.
If I was switching from windows or macintosh to linux right now, and I saw the foundation behind not only the predominant desktop environment but also gtk, hiring a "bridge between the material and spiritual worlds, between the seen and unseen worlds" as their new executive director, I would go running back to m$/apple as fast as I could and never look back again.
Regarding the graphical deb installer in Ubuntu: I agree that it's never a good thing to break existing functionality without a very good reason, but I find the reasoning why this is bad problematic: no, users should absolutely NOT expect the default way of installing software to be the same as on Windows, e.g. downloading installers from random websites. There is something very wrong if users are not taught that the default source for installing software on Linux should be your distribution's official repos.
