  • CORRECTION: The HP Pavilion originally had 512mb RAM (2 x 256mb sticks). So it's a relatively significant upgrade going into 2GB. 🥳

This old laptop wouldnt boot to USB so I had to install EasyBCD PLOP Boot Manager (the free non-commercial version) to the old Windows 7 so it could recognize the Lubuntu installer. (Plop worked on this laptop but it didnt work on an all-in-one Sony VAIO so it's a bit picky)

  • I don't know why some folks hate on older laps. They're perfect for the hobbyist looking to fix up old tech or for the broke student just needing something to write papers on. The old lap is not necessarily your go-to laptop but can be a great secondary machine when you don't want to use your newer, main machine. I don't know why more folks don't keep at least one old lap around.

  • My first laptop, my parents told me if I break it they will never buy me anything else :)). The 9 year old me was scared af. 3 years later my mom broke it xD

  • I strongly ecommend you Loc-OS Linux distro… It's based on Debian but it's much more lightweight than Lubuntu and it also has 32-bit support.

  • My ThinkPad R61 from 2007 runs Linux Mint, and it holds its own against newer basic laptops. I can watch YouTube vids, edit on WordPress, browse Facebook, and download large files at fast speeds. That last one comes in handy when making bootable USBs, which I can do without looking for a 3rd party app. Along with reducing e-waste, old laptops are great tinkering projects.👍🏽

  • My current laptop that I still use to this day is 13 years old and back then this laptop was a flagship laptop and currently runs win10 runs games loads everything perfectly and I’m probably still gonna use it for another 13 years

  • Yes it will still work but will most likely be slow I do believe in prolonging a pc life but from 2005 it’s not worth it. If it was from 2012 and had decided spec parts yes putting in an ssd and increase in ram would be worth it. And the price of parts should be cheap and the power of the cpu should be good enough to take full advantage. I know from experience that when a pc reaches a certain age the software support runs out, there is often one core part that prevents upgrade to the latest OS and another major part that bottle necks any upgrade.

  • SSD is sold as well for USB usage starting from 10$ to 50$ is averagw SSD price on Aliexpress shop, well personally I was Wiped Disk by Parted Magic Linux and it runs agains in same time Ubuntu prefers install they Linux creating place for Windows in same time if Linux is installed first, Aliexpress provides with USB video cards as well USB RAM 64GB for some 30$.

  • The only devices that becomes useless with age are Apple's

  • Try chromeos flex by the way if you say 32 but no support no worries old laptops have unsoldiered cpu and sockets for new cpu

  • You can install wine and winetricks to run windows games or programs.

  • I asked my mom to give me her old laptop and it it a HP 15 db from 2019. Some keyboard keys didn't work and the battery was almost dead to the 10% of his capacity. I put the laptop EndevourOS and it's very quick because it has an SSD.
I spent approximately $86 dollars fixing the laptop.

  • I was able to get windows 10 32bit on a 2006 laptop with 2gb of RAM

  • Mine 4gb ram & 512 Harddisk in my laptop if I put lubuntu os . Can I use it for coding with intellij idea ? Id

  • If you don't value your time you can save it, this pattern keeps appearing on the linux community

  • Yeah pass it someone so they throw it in a garbage

  • Tbh Linux saves old computers, also in the new VLC update you can load a youtube link in there and watch it without downloading SMTube.

  • I did exactly what you did with my mother's ancient 2012 HP Pavilion G6!
i7 3612qm, 16GB RAM and 2 500gb SSDs and Windows 10. Runs like a champ to my surprise

  • Lubuntu is really great for my eee pc! It’s fast and uses less ram than windows 7!

  • A cheaper option (although slow) is to use an ide to cf card, make sure the cf card is not set to removable
