Back in the early 1990's I knew that we would run out of IP4 internet addresses. They skipped the IP5 protocol, and went straight to IP6. This added "trillions" of new IP addresses.

The classful networking predate IANA as it started to be used in 1981. If anyone, blame DARPA.
