Should I Get a Linux CERT?!?

Linux Certifications are a great way to help get a job in IT. But there are so many to choose from, and some are better than others.

In this video, I cover the most common Linux certs, my thoughts on them, how much they cost, and what to expect when taking them.

Linux Essentials:

Linux Professional Institute Linux Essentials

LPIC-1:

Linux Professional Institute LPIC-1

LPIC-2:

Linux Professional Institute LPIC-2

LPIC-3:

Linux Professional Institute LPIC-3 Mixed Environments

Linux Foundation LFCS:

  • Good roll-up. Sad to hear about the Linux Foundation exams, I was actually looking at that for work. I have the LPI Linux Essentials which was very easy to pass. One thought about LPIC-3. I was under the impression reading their website that you only have to pass 1 of the 4 exams offered in a specialization, not all of them.

  • I’m planning on doing rhcsa, and rhce. What would u recommend after if I do pass?

  • of the agnostic certs, it looks like all but the Linux foundation exams can be done at a test site. after hearing of your experience with proctored online exam and friends doing college online proctored exams, i would be more comfortable at a test site. i received multiple calls from friends panicked that their computer had an error trying to login or during an exam.

  • Thank you very much Shawn, your videos are great!

  • wonderful YT Linux essential tutor , i love what you say at the end of the video " Do what you love, be kind."

  • I want to specialize on DevOps, so I wondering which linux cert will serve me better LPIC Essentials, LPIC-1 or Linux+

  • Took the exam yesterday and watching your course certainly helped me prepare. Thank you! What's your opinion on the LPI Security Essentials and Web Development Essentials?

  • I really enjoyed the LPI videos and the information you provided Shawn, have you considered doing similar public courses (from university or other web certifications) for general educational stuff that could be helpful and entertaining?

  • I want to follow up on this. First off THANK YOU!!. I just took the test this morning and finished in no time. Not a flex, but your videos for the cert could not have been more helpful, and honestly just the videos might have been enough to pass the test. Take that with a grain of salt as might not be enough for everyone. Please don't stop making videos you are amazing!!!

  • Dude, you are a fantastic educator! Just passed the 010-160 yesterday using only your material.

  • I gave the LFCS exam today…..Unfortunately my experience was exactly same as you. Never expected such a bad experience for an expensive examination.. I also could not finish the exam because of the PSI secure browser loading and multiple check ins….Even after multiple check ins different proctors are getting connected and asking for repeating the checkins in the middle of exam. The exam was not that tough, but I got disconnected after some time because of all of this issues..The worst part is I did not even get a proper response from the PSI TECH SUPPORT team or from the LFCS SUPPORT team.

  • CODEX OF ALERA BOOK SERIES in the background… is the reason to subscribe

  • why don't you make a course for the LPIC-1 too? you are very good Shawn!

  • On LPI3 you only need to pass a specialisation exam to be LPIC3 nowadays. I also want to be very honest PSA exams which some use is just very frustrating with the Linux foundation for example my last exam trough PSI was for terraform which was a hell, PSI is also not in compliance with european regultaries for consumers.

  • Hi Shawn, there's one very important thing you don't talk about in this video: time-limited validity of certificates!

  • Shawn,
I just passed the Linux Essentials exam. The material I used to study were:
1.) Your video series here on YouTube.
2.) The course from A Cloud Guru.
    3.) Jason Dion's book.

I worked completely through all of these. I probably could have just used your video series and only one of the other two.

But I feel well primed to begin a course for either LPIC-1 or Linux +

I wanted to say thank you for your video series. Your presentation style is great! I enjoyed it very much.

You clearly put a lot of time into creating the series. If you paid that much attention towards a free video series for an entry level cert, I can only imagine how good your next course will be.

If I'm asked which certification I'll pursue next between Linux + and LPIC-1, my answer will be, 'Whichever one Swawn Powers makes a training course for'..

I'm looking forward to it and am eager to sign up and pay as soon as you announce it.

    Thank you Sir!

  • Which cert do you recommend for someone working in a data center but with zero knowledge of Linux? I have CCNA and A+. From Virginia

  • Ethical note (!) on Linux+: CompTIA actively, aggressively campaigns against right to repair, so if that's something you care about, you may want to watch where your money goes.

  • btw LPIC certs validity period is 5years vs 3 years of linux foundation and redhat certs
